Mirror Text Generator

Mirror writing is text that reads correctly only when reflected in a mirror. Leonardo da Vinci famously wrote all his notes in mirror script, believed to be a way to prevent casual readers from deciphering his work quickly.

True mirror text substitutes letters with their reflected counterparts where Unicode provides them: b⇺d, d⇺b, p⇺q, q⇺p, and several others using International Phonetic Alphabet characters. The result is then reversed so it reads right-to-left.

Mirror text is popular for creative usernames, cryptic Instagram bios, tattoo concepts, and typographic art projects. While not every letter has a perfect mirror Unicode equivalent, the result is convincingly reflective for most words.

The most familiar mirror text in the world drives past you with its lights on: AMBULANCE is printed reversed on the front of emergency vehicles precisely so that it reads correctly in a driver's rear-view mirror. It works especially well because so many of its capitals — A, M, U et al. — are symmetric around a vertical axis. Eleven capital letters (A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y) mirror into themselves, which is why a word like MAXIMUM barely changes in a mirror while a word like BEDS turns to nonsense.

Unicode has no official mirrored alphabet — there is no 'Latin Mirrored' block. Generators like this one assemble the effect from look-alikes scattered across the standard: reversed and turned letters from the International Phonetic Alphabet, Latin Extended ranges, and phonetic-notation blocks. That is why some letters mirror crisply while others are approximations — the character set was never designed for this job, it just happens to contain enough raw material.

Mirror text and reversed text are different tricks: reversing only flips the order of the letters, while mirroring also flips each glyph. 'hello' reversed is 'olleh' — still made of normal letters; 'hello' mirrored replaces the letters themselves with reflected forms.
