WhatsApp quietly ships more native styling than almost any competitor: wrap a word in *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italics, ~tildes~ for strikethrough, and triple backticks for monospace — typed inline, no menu needed (long-press menus offer the same options). For message text, that built-in kit covers the classics before any generator enters the picture.

What the built-ins cannot touch are the identity surfaces: your profile name, the About line, group names and group descriptions all ignore the wrapping syntax and render it as literal punctuation. Those are exactly the fields where pasted Unicode styles work — a 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 group name or small-caps About is characters, not formatting, so it displays for every member on every device.

WhatsApp's audience is the broadest of any messenger — grandparents, colleagues, school groups — and message text there is read, not scanned. That makes the platform the strongest case for the style-the-label rule: decorate the group name (✦ 𝒻𝒶𝓂𝒾𝓁𝓎 ✦ works beautifully in a list of plain chats), style your profile name if you like, and keep message bodies in the native bold/italic that every device renders instantly.

One device note worth knowing: WhatsApp runs on a huge range of old Android handsets, where newer Unicode blocks render as boxes more often than on flagship phones. The core mathematical styles (bold, italic, script) are the safe set; supplement-block characters are the first to break.
