Strikethrough Text Generator

Strikethrough began as pure bureaucracy — the proofreader's and clerk's mark for 'delete this' that leaves the deleted text visible for the record, which is why contracts and legal drafts still strike passages rather than erase them. The internet turned that transparency into a voice. Writing ~~what I actually think~~ what I'm supposed to say became one of online writing's signature jokes: the strikethrough says the quiet part out loud while pretending to take it back. It is the only text style whose entire meaning is 'deleted, but on purpose'.

The same visible-deletion logic drives its commercial use — the struck-out old price next to the new one — where the point is precisely that you still see what was removed.

Unicode has no strikethrough switch; what this generator adds is the combining long stroke overlay (U+0336), a mark that draws itself through whatever character precedes it. Attach one to every letter and the string appears continuously struck — the line is not formatting but a chain of tiny overlaid dashes, one per character, riding along wherever the text is pasted.

That is why it works in Instagram bios and display names where no formatting button exists — and why a struck word survives copy-paste while a word struck via a platform's own markdown (like Discord's ~~tildes~~) reverts to plain text the moment it leaves. Character-based strikethrough is portable deletion.
