About Cursive S
Cursive S is satisfying to write and often searched because the lowercase 𝓈 looks little like the printed s — it is a rounded, pointed shape that closes with a small loop. The capital 𝒮 keeps the familiar S-curve but adds an entry loop at the top that makes it flow.
How to Write Cursive S
Draw the capital S as a tall S-curve that starts with a small loop at the top and sweeps down and around. The lowercase s begins with an upstroke to the midline, curves back to make a small pointed top, then closes with a little loop at the baseline that carries into the next letter. Keeping the top pointed rather than round is what makes it a cursive s.
Common mistake
Writing the lowercase s like a printed s with an open bottom — cursive s closes with a small loop at the baseline so it can connect.
The Letter That Used to Look Like an F
S has the strangest handwriting history of any letter. Until the early 1800s, English writing used two lowercase forms side by side: the round s we know, and the 'long s' — ſ — a tall letter that looks to modern eyes almost exactly like an f without its full crossbar. The long s appeared at the start and in the middle of words, the round s at the end, which is why old documents show spellings like 'Congreſs' and 'ſucceſs' that trip up modern readers.
The long s survives today as Unicode character U+017F, and its ghost explains why some antique cursive s forms look so unfamiliar. When printers and writing masters finally dropped it around the turn of the nineteenth century, the round s took over everywhere — but the cursive lowercase s kept a distinctive shape of its own, closer to a small pointed sail than to the printed letter.
The Loop at the Bottom Is Not Optional
The printed lowercase s ends with an open curve at the bottom — the stroke simply stops. The cursive s cannot afford that, because a stroke that stops cannot connect. So the cursive s finishes by closing a small loop at the baseline, and that loop is the exit that carries the pen to the next letter. Leave the bottom open, print-style, and the s strands itself mid-word.
The other half of the letter's character is the pointed top. The cursive s rises to a small point at the midline rather than a rounded cap — round the top and it drifts toward an o or an undotted i. S is among the most common letters in English (it sits just behind the e-t-a-o-i-n group in frequency counts), so both details get constant exercise: 'sass', 'sisters' and 'sunset' are worth a few slow repetitions each, because they place the s at the start, middle and end of the join.
Copying the Script S
Unlike its long-lost sibling ſ, the script s above needs no history lesson to use: 𝒮 (U+1D4AE) and 𝓈 (U+1D4C8) are living Unicode characters from the mathematical script range, and copying them off this page gives you genuine text. Drop them into a bio, a display name or a caption and every current phone or desktop renders them as-is — no font to install, nothing image-based to break.
Cursive S — Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the s in old handwriting look like an f?
That is the long s (ſ), a second lowercase form used at the start and middle of words until the early 1800s — which is why old documents spell 'Congress' as 'Congreſs'. It looks like an f without the full crossbar, and it survives in Unicode as U+017F.
How is cursive s different from printed s?
Two ways: the top rises to a small point rather than a rounded cap, and the bottom closes into a small loop at the baseline instead of ending in an open curve. That closing loop is what lets the s connect to the next letter.
What is the fancy script S I can copy and paste?
𝒮 (U+1D4AE) for the capital and 𝓈 (U+1D4C8) for the lowercase — real Unicode text from the mathematical script range, so they behave like ordinary characters wherever you paste them.
