Gothic Letter S — Copy & Paste

S is the only letter on this site with a character officially added to a major language's alphabet within living memory. German's ß (eszett) historically had no uppercase form — it never starts a word — so words containing it had a problem in ALL-CAPS settings: STRASSE or STRAẞE? The traditional rule replaced ß with SS, which created genuine ambiguity (Maße, 'measurements', and Masse, 'mass', collapse into the same capitals). Unicode encoded a capital ẞ at U+1E9E in 2008, and in 2017 the Council for German Orthography made it officially acceptable.

That story belongs on this page because ß itself was born in the script these characters imitate — it began as a blackletter ligature of the letter s. The Fraktur s you copy here is the ancestor; the ẞ ruling is the family's newest chapter, still being written.

Fraktur breaks nearly every curve into angles — it is what the name means — but the s resists more than most letters. The capital 𝔖 (U+1D516) keeps a recognisably S-shaped double curve under its ornament, making it one of the friendlier gothic capitals for a cold reader. The lowercase 𝔰 (U+1D530) is compact, with a closed, knotted look that distinguishes it sharply from the tall f-like long-s forms of older German printing.

S is also a workhorse in both of Fraktur's lives: it is among the most frequent letters in English and German, and it starts more English words than any other letter. Whatever phrase you convert below, the 𝔰 will almost certainly be in it — its legibility effectively sets the ceiling for the phrase's readability.

For monograms, the 𝔖's surviving S-curve makes it a safe pick alongside the R and H — S-names (Sofia, Samuel, Santiago) keep their identity where an A-name gambles on the reader. In full words, watch the 'st' pair specifically: both letters are compact and angular in Fraktur, and 'street'-type words are where the style first turns dense.
