Gothic Letter X — Copy & Paste

The abbreviation 'Xmas' gets condemned as modern disrespect, but it is neither modern nor disrespectful: it is scribal Greek, a thousand years old. X is the Greek letter chi, the first letter of Χριστός (Christos), and medieval scribes — including the Anglo-Saxon chroniclers writing in exactly the manuscript tradition this style evokes — routinely wrote 'Xp̄es mæsse' and similar forms for Christ's mass. The chi-rho monogram (☧, chi and rho overlaid) is among the oldest Christian symbols, and X-for-Christ shorthand appears in English manuscripts from at least the eleventh century.

So when you copy the gothic 𝔵 for a December caption, you are on firmer historical ground than the person telling you to spell it out: the X was doing this job in blackletter hands before English spelling itself had settled.

X is among the least-used letters in both English and German, and blackletter treats it accordingly — the Fraktur lowercase 𝔵 (U+1D535) is a compact crossing with a small descending sweep on the left stroke, one of the few diagonal gestures in a script of verticals. That rarity is a legibility gift: an x can hardly be mistaken for anything else on a blackletter page, because nothing else crosses.

The capital 𝔛 (U+1D51B) doubles the drama with spurred, broken diagonals — a rare letter given the full ornamental treatment, precisely because it had so few chances to appear.

X-names are scarce — Xaver, Ximena — making the 𝔛 one of the most distinctive monograms available; nobody else at the table has one. In words, x mostly appears at ends and crossings ('onyx', 'axe'), where its diagonal break is welcome variety.
