The Spanish Γ Is an N Wearing a Tiny N
The most famous descendant of the gothic-era n is hiding in plain sight on Spanish keyboards. Medieval scribes, saving time and parchment, abbreviated a doubled n by writing one n with a small mark above it β originally a miniature second n, flattened by speed into a wavy line. Latin annus became Spanish aΓ±o, the abbreviation became standard spelling, and that flattened little n is the tilde: Γ± is literally an n wearing the ghost of another n.
Spanish later made the abbreviation a full letter of its alphabet β one of the few cases where a scribal shortcut from the blackletter centuries earned permanent, official status in a modern language.
Reading the Gothic N
The Fraktur lowercase π« (U+1D52B) is m's narrower sibling: two vertical strokes joined by a broken shoulder, closed at the top and open at the base β the exact inverse of u, which shares the same two-stroke skeleton but opens at the top. In blackletter's uniform texture that top-versus-bottom difference is the whole distinction, which is why the two letters have tested readers for as long as the script has existed.
The capital π is livelier: a broad arched frame with a hairline hook sweeping in from the left, more calligraphic flourish than fence-post.
