G in Gothic Letters β the Character
G pairs π (U+1D50A) with π€ β G carries its shape everywhere.
The Fraktur Letter Mathematicians Write Every Day
Most of the styled alphabets on this site survive as decoration. The Fraktur lowercase g survives as working notation: in modern mathematics, π€ is the standard symbol for a Lie algebra β the algebra attached to a group G is written π€, in papers, textbooks and lecture boards all over the world, right now. Whole families of these objects carry fraktur names (π°π©, π°π¬, π°π²), and the lowercase g leads them.
That daily mathematical use is a large part of why the Fraktur alphabet was encoded into Unicode's mathematical block at all. So the π€ you copy from this page is not a revival of a dead script β it is a character that never stopped being written, just by a smaller and more specialised crowd.
Reading the Gothic G
The Fraktur lowercase π€ (U+1D524) keeps the single-storey plan of handwritten g β one bowl, one descender β but executes both in broken strokes: the bowl is an angular knot rather than a circle, and the tail below the baseline sweeps left in a long, open curve that is one of the more generous gestures in an otherwise tight script. The capital π (U+1D50A) is among Fraktur's most elaborate letters, its C-like frame filled with hooks and hairlines.
In dense text the g's descender does useful work: like j, p and q, it breaks the rhythm of the picket fence and gives the eye a landmark below the line.
Setting the Gothic G
G-names β Gabriel, Greta, Gunnar, Giselle β give the ornate π natural monogram use, and the capital rewards size: small, its internal detail muddies; large, it reads as deliberate ornament. In running words ('dragon', 'kingdom', 'gothic' itself), the lowercase carries the style comfortably.
Preview 'gg' pairs and g-beside-descender words ('digging', 'gargoyle') in the converter below β stacked descenders are where blackletter spacing gets tested.
Copying This G
π (U+1D50A) and π€ (U+1D524) copy from the cards above as ordinary Unicode text β both sit in sequence in the mathematical block, with none of the encoding holes that affect C, H, I, R and Z.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do mathematicians use the Fraktur g?βΌ
By convention the Lie algebra of a Lie group G is written π€ β a fraktur letter distinguishes the algebra from the group itself. This working mathematical use is a key reason the Fraktur alphabet exists in Unicode's mathematical symbols block at all.
Is the gothic G affected by Unicode's Fraktur holes?βΌ
No. Five Fraktur capitals (C, H, I, R, Z) live in a different block because they were encoded earlier as standalone math symbols, but G is regular: π at U+1D50A and π€ at U+1D524, both in the main mathematical block, in sequence.
G β how do I copy this gothic letter?βΌ
G copies from either card up top β tap once and G lands wherever you paste.
G on Instagram and Discord β does it paste?βΌ
G is code point U+1D50A, so G survives any paste intact.
G in Unicode β which code point?βΌ
G: U+1D50A upper, U+1D524 lower β G needs no font anywhere.
