The Letter That Had a Twin
For a few centuries, English readers lived with two letters g at once. When Norman scribes brought their continental 'Carolingian' g to England, the native insular g โ a flat-topped form that had evolved separately in Irish and English manuscripts โ did not die. It shrank into a distinct letter, yogh (ศ, U+021D), and Middle English used both side by side with different jobs: the continental g for the hard g sound, yogh for throaty and y-like sounds English had no other letter for. Words like 'ศear' (year) and 'niศt' (night) wore the twin.
Yogh eventually lost its jobs to gh and y and vanished โ but the episode makes g the only letter that split into two working letters in English and then reabsorbed the difference. The bold Fraktur ๐ (U+1D58C) descends from the continental branch that won.
Blackletter's Most Intricate Lowercase
