M in Old English Letters โ€” the Character

M pairs ๐•ธ (U+1D578) with ๐–’ โ€” M carries its shape everywhere.

The Letter Scribes Loved to Delete

Medieval scribes had a trick for the alphabet's widest letter: they simply left it out. Because m (and its cousin n) ate so much horizontal space on expensive parchment, a scribe would drop the letter entirely and draw a small horizontal bar โ€” the titulus โ€” over the preceding vowel: 'homine' became 'hoฤซe' with a stroke over the i-e, 'quam' became 'quฤ'. Readers of the era expanded these abbreviations without thinking, the way we read 'Dr.' as doctor. The practice was so standard that early printed books, including blackletter Bibles, kept the abbreviation bars in type.

That habit survives in an unexpected place: the tilde. The Spanish รฑ began as exactly this scribal bar โ€” 'anno' (year) abbreviated to 'aรฑo' with the omitted n drawn as a squiggle above. Every รฑ is a fossilised deleted letter, and m was the letter most often deleted this way.

Maximum Blackletter

If blackletter is a picket fence of vertical strokes, m is the longest run of fence in the alphabet โ€” three identical minims in a row, the densest single letter on the page. In Textura the m is practically the style's unit of measure: type historians gauge a blackletter's texture by how its m sits, and the em โ€” the width unit typographers still use today, as in 'em dash' โ€” is named for the capital M, historically the widest character in a font.

The bold Fraktur ๐–’ (U+1D592) tames the density with broken, angular arches, but it remains the heaviest lowercase in the set. Where the m goes, the page darkens.

Setting the Old English M

M-names โ€” Maria, Mohammed, Margarethe, Marcus โ€” make the grand ๐•ธ (U+1D578) one of the most-used blackletter monograms; its cathedral-arch structure is the style at its most architectural. In words, the lowercase's triple arch gives 'memory', 'might' and 'mother' visible weight.

The stress test is m beside n or u ('human', 'moment') โ€” neighbouring arches are where blackletter density peaks. Check your word in the converter below at final size.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did medieval scribes abbreviate m?โ–ผ

By deleting it and drawing a bar (the titulus) over the preceding vowel โ€” 'quam' became 'quฤ'. Parchment was expensive and m is the widest letter, so it was the most-abbreviated. The Spanish รฑ is a fossil of the same trick: 'anno' shortened to 'aรฑo', the squiggle being the omitted n.

What is an 'em' in typography?โ–ผ

A width unit named after the capital M, historically the widest character in a font โ€” the source of 'em dash' and CSS's em unit. In blackletter the m's three-minim density made it practically the style's unit of texture.
