Old English Letter H — Copy & Paste

H was already dying in Roman mouths while blackletter's ancestors were still being invented. In everyday spoken Latin the h sound faded early — Romans joked about people who added or dropped aitches in the wrong places — and by the late empire it was effectively silent. Every Romance language inherited the silence: French heure, Spanish hora, Italian ora all keep or drop the written h while pronouncing none of it. Medieval scribes therefore spent centuries copying a letter that often marked no sound at all, kept alive purely by spelling tradition.

English caught the confusion secondhand: words borrowed from French arrived with silent h (hour, honest, heir), while native and re-Latinised words pronounce it (house, host). The mixed rules English speakers wrestle with today are the long echo of Rome losing a sound while its alphabet — including the bold Fraktur 𝕳 you copy here — kept the letter anyway.

In German Fraktur printing — this style's working home — the lowercase h did constant duty in the ch and sch combinations that saturate German (ich, nicht, Schrift, schön). Fraktur treats ch as a near-inseparable unit, and the h's looped ascender beside the compact c gives German blackletter text one of its most recognisable rhythms: short letter, tall letter, again and again.

The bold 𝖍 (U+1D58D) carries the shape that makes it work — a full-height ascender with a low, tucked bow. Beside the b (whose bow closes) and the k (whose arm knots), the h keeps its bow open and low, one of the three tall-letter silhouettes a Fraktur reader's eye learns to split at speed.
