A point of honest labelling: the letters on this page are called Old English because that is what everyone searches for, but strictly speaking they are blackletter — the dense, angular script that dominated European books and documents from roughly the twelfth century onward. Old English the language is something else entirely: the English of Beowulf, spoken centuries before this lettering style existed, and written in a largely round insular hand that looks nothing like these characters.

The name stuck because early English printers kept using blackletter type long after the rest of Europe moved on, so the style became associated with old English documents. When you copy the 𝕮 above for a tattoo design, a band logo or a certificate, you are borrowing the look of a medieval scribe's textura — the 'woven' script named for how its dense vertical strokes made a page look like textile.

The character you copy here is 𝕮, code point U+1D56E — Mathematical Bold Fraktur Capital C, with the lowercase 𝖈 at U+1D588. But C is one of the special letters in the Fraktur corner of Unicode. The non-bold Fraktur capital, ℭ, lives at U+212D in the Letterlike Symbols block, far from its alphabet — because mathematicians were using ℭ as a standalone symbol before Unicode built the full Fraktur alphabet, so it was grandfathered in and the newer block skipped its slot.

Only five Fraktur capitals have that history — C, H, I, R and Z — and you are looking at one of them. It changes nothing about copying: the bold 𝕮 on this page is a complete, ordinary Unicode character that pastes anywhere text goes. It is simply a letter with a better backstory than most.

Blackletter is a family, not a single script, and the three great branches treat a letter like C differently. Textura — the oldest and most formal — builds letters from rigid vertical strokes with diamond feet, and its C is angular, almost hexagonal. Rotunda, the southern European branch, keeps the round bowl of the C open and generous. Fraktur, the German branch these Unicode characters imitate, splits the difference: the name literally means 'broken', and its C carries a bowl that is round on one side and fractured into angles on the other.

Knowing the branch matters when you are matching a look. Tattoo lettering and certificate work usually draw on Textura's formality; the Unicode 𝕮 you copy here follows the Fraktur model, which reads slightly livelier and less rigid. If a design calls for the strict cathedral look, pair this character with heavier letter-spacing to push it toward Textura's cadence.

Blackletter styles live and die by contrast: the thick verticals only read as 'medieval' when they sit against enough empty space. The 𝕮 works best leading a word — a name, a gamertag, an initial on a certificate line — where its heavy curve gets room to breathe.
