Old English Letter N — Copy & Paste

Some of English's strangest spellings are blackletter damage control, and n is at the centre of the story. In dense medieval hands, n and u were both written as two bare minims — literally indistinguishable — and m added a third. A word like 'sunu' (Old English for son) or 'lufu' (love) became an uncountable run of identical strokes. Scribes' fix was radical: they changed the spelling, swapping the u for a rounder o next to n, m and v. That is why son, come, some, love, won and monk are spelled with o but pronounced with the u-sound — the o is a twelfth-century legibility patch that never got reverted.

It is one of the clearest cases of a script reshaping a language: the words changed their written form not because the sound changed, but because blackletter's n could not be told from its u.

When type designers evaluate a blackletter face, the n is where they look first. Its two-stroke arch is the smallest complete expression of the style's rhythm — stroke, turn, stroke — and whatever weight, angle and spacing the n establishes, the rest of the lowercase inherits. Punchcutters historically test-cut the n early for exactly this reason: get it right and the alphabet follows; get it wrong and every word broadcasts the error.

The capital 𝕹 (U+1D579) plays by different rules — a diagonal crossing heavy spurred posts, one of the Fraktur capitals that keeps its roman skeleton recognisable, and therefore one of the safer monogram choices in the set.

N-names — Nikolaus, Nadia, Nathan, Nora — give the 𝕹 steady monogram work. In words, the lowercase's arch pairs into 'night', 'noble' and 'northern' cleanly, though it is the letter most responsible for blackletter's dense texture.
