Old English Letter E — Copy & Paste

The first printed book in the West — Gutenberg's 42-line Bible of the 1450s — was set in a blackletter textura very close in spirit to the letters on this page. And its type case held roughly 290 different characters. Not 26, not 52: about 290. Gutenberg cut multiple variant forms of common letters, plus dozens of ligatures and scribal abbreviations, because his product had to pass for the work of a professional scribe, and scribes never wrote the same letter identically twice.

No letter earned its variants harder than e, the most frequent letter in Latin and in English alike. On a dense blackletter page the e appears so often that a single rigid form creates visible vertical banding — the repeating shape catches the eye like a pattern in wallpaper. Variant e's broke the pattern and let the printed page breathe like a written one.

Every blackletter e lives or dies by its eye — the small enclosed counter in the upper half of the letter. Blackletter strokes are heavy by design, and at small sizes the eye is the first detail on the whole page to clog into a solid black blob, turning e into something closer to a c or an o. Medieval scribes managed this with razor-thin hairline strokes closing the eye; screen fonts manage it with hinting; and you manage it by not setting bold Fraktur 𝖊 too small.

That is the practical rule for this page's characters: the lowercase 𝖊 is beautiful at display sizes and murky below them. If a bio or username will mostly be seen at phone scale, test the word in the converter and check whether the e still reads — it is the canary for the whole word's legibility.

German's umlaut dots — the marks on ä, ö and ü — are this letter in disguise. In German handwriting of the blackletter era, the modified vowels were written with a small e placed directly above the vowel: aᵉ, oᵉ, uᵉ. As hands got faster, that superscript e degenerated — first into two short vertical dashes (which you can still see in old Fraktur printing), and finally into the two dots on a modern keyboard.

So every ä in a German text carries a compressed, fossilised e on its roof, put there by the same writing tradition these characters imitate. It is one of the cleaner examples of how blackletter habits outlived blackletter itself: the script left everyday use, but its shorthand became permanent orthography.

E rarely leads names — far fewer given names start with E than with A or S — so the 𝕰 sees less monogram duty. Where this letter earns its place is inside words: as the most frequent letter in English, the lowercase 𝖊 appears in almost any word you convert, which makes its legibility the single biggest factor in whether a full blackletter phrase stays readable.

A useful test word is 'street' or 'sweet' — double e plus surrounding consonants shows immediately whether the eyes clog at your target size. If they do, the fix is fewer blackletter words, larger size, or capitals-only for a short phrase; all three are testable in the generator below.
