K in Old English Letters โ the Character
K pairs ๐ถ (U+1D576) with ๐ โ K travels as real text, no font needed.
Why 'King' Has a K but 'Cat' Has a C
Old English โ the language โ barely used the letter k: the word we now write as 'king' was spelled cyning, with a c. The k invasion happened in Middle English, and it happened for a precise reason: after the Norman conquest, French spelling habits made c 'soft' before e and i (as in city and cell), which suddenly made words like cyning ambiguous. Scribes solved it by redeploying the underused k for the hard sound before those vowels โ king, keep, kin โ while c kept its job before a, o and u: cat, cold, cup.
That division of labour, drawn up by medieval scribes in exactly the blackletter hands this style imitates, is still the rule your spelling follows today. Every k in 'king' and c in 'cat' is a small piece of Middle English scribal policy, unchanged for seven centuries.
The Knotted Capital
The bold Fraktur capital ๐ถ (U+1D576) is one of the set's most elaborate constructions โ a spurred spine with an arm and leg that knot together before kicking away. Blackletter K forms vary enormously between sources (the letter was rare in the Latin manuscripts that standardised most letterforms), and Fraktur's answer was to lean into ornament: if the letter appears seldom, make it an event.
The lowercase ๐ (U+1D590) is tamer but keeps the signature knot where arm meets stem. Beside the open-bowed h and the closed-bowed b, the knotted k completes the trio of tall letters a Fraktur reader distinguishes by their midsections.
Setting the Old English K
K-names โ Katherine, Klaus, Kwame, Kirsten โ give the ornate ๐ถ frequent monogram duty, and its complexity reads as craftsmanship at display sizes. In words, the lowercase's knot keeps 'kingdom', 'dark' and 'strike' distinct in dense settings.
Preview 'ck' pairs ('black', 'rock') in the converter below โ in Fraktur tradition ck was a fused ligature, and while Unicode sets the letters separately, the pair remains the k's most common English company.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does English use k before e and i but c before a, o and u?โผ
Middle English scribes drew that line: French habits made c soft before e and i (city, cell), so the underused k took over the hard sound there โ king, keep, kin โ while c kept a, o, u (cat, cold, cup). Old English had spelled 'king' as cyning; the k is a medieval disambiguation that still governs your spelling.
Why do blackletter K designs vary so much?โผ
Because k was rare in the Latin manuscripts that standardised most letterforms, so no single K shape got enough repetition to win. Fraktur leaned into ornament instead โ its knotted, spurred K treats the rare letter as an event.
