Old English Letter P — Copy & Paste

Every word processor hides a mark that looks like a mirrored blackletter P: the pilcrow, ¶, the paragraph sign. The natural assumption — that it is a P for 'paragraph' — is wrong. The pilcrow began life as a letter C, for the Latin capitulum ('little head', a chapter or section). Medieval rubricators drew a C at each new section and, to make it pop, doubled its vertical stroke and filled the bowl with ink; centuries of that thickening turned the C into the reversed-P shape we know. It is a C wearing so much decoration it became unrecognisable.

The pilcrow was born on exactly the kind of manuscript page this style imitates: rubricators added the marks in red between blocks of blackletter text. So the 𝕻 you copy here and the ¶ (U+00B6) in your word processor are old page-mates — even though only one of them is actually a P.

In Old and Middle English manuscripts, the letter p had a dangerous neighbour: thorn (þ), the lost letter for the th sound, which is drawn as a vertical stem with a bowl — almost a p with the bowl moved up. In hurried blackletter hands the two could blur, and scribes learned to keep the p's bowl low and full precisely to keep 'þat' (that) and 'pat' apart. The bold Fraktur 𝖕 (U+1D595) keeps that discipline: a deep bowl hung low on a descending stem.

It is a small case study in how alphabets police themselves — letters that share a skeleton drift apart in the details, because the alternative is words that cannot be told apart.

P-names — Patrick, Paloma, Pedro, Pearl — give the capital 𝕻 (U+1D57B) regular monogram duty, its heavy spurred bowl reading as solidly medieval. In converted words the lowercase's descender gives 'prayer', 'power' and 'pride' a firm anchor below the line.
