Italic Text Generator

Generate italic text using Unicode mathematical italic characters that paste anywhere as plain text. These italic characters work in Instagram bios, LinkedIn posts, Discord messages, and anywhere else you need stylised text — no HTML or markdown needed.

Also on this style: Italic text font — how Mathematical Italic is built, and the one letter that breaks the range.

Where You Don't Need an Italic Generator

Two big chat apps already have italics built in. On Discord, wrap words in single asterisks or underscores — *like this* or _like this_ — and three asterisks on each side (***like this***) make bold italics. On WhatsApp, italics use underscores: _like this_. Both are real formatting, so the words stay normal letters that search and screen readers treat as words.

That formatting only works in messages. Discord display names and server names, Instagram and TikTok bios, and most name fields show the asterisks and underscores as typed. Those are the places a generator is for: it swaps each letter for an italic Unicode character, so the slant goes wherever the text goes.

Three Italics, Three Looks

The converter gives three slanted alphabets. Serif italic (𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑐) is the classic book style. Bold italic (𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒄) is heavier and stands out in a busy feed. Sans italic (𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤) has no serifs, so it sits closer to the plain sans-serif text that most apps use for everything else.

Pick by where the text sits. For one stressed phrase inside a normal caption, sans italic blends in best. For a name or a headline, bold italic holds its own. Serif italic suits quotes and titles, where the bookish look is the point.

What Italic Text Can't Do

Unicode has no italic digits. The italic alphabets cover A–Z and a–z only, so numbers stay upright: level 12 becomes 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙 12. Punctuation stays plain too. Each italic letter also takes two UTF-16 code units where a plain letter takes one — the word italic is 6 units typed normally and 12 in any of the three italic styles — so tight length limits fill faster.

Building a web page? Don't paste Unicode italics into it. Use real markup instead: <em> for stress, <i> for things like foreign words and ship names, or font-style: italic in CSS. Real italics keep the words searchable, let screen readers say them as words, and follow your site's font.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type italics on Discord?▼

Wrap the words in single asterisks or underscores: *text* or _text_. Use three asterisks, ***text***, for bold italics. This works in messages. For a display name or server name, paste Unicode italics from this page instead.

How do I italicize text on WhatsApp?▼

Put an underscore on both sides: _text_. WhatsApp also uses *text* for bold, ~text~ for strikethrough and three backticks for monospace. Where those marks show up as typed, paste Unicode italics instead.

Why aren't my numbers italic?▼

Unicode never added italic digits. The italic alphabets cover letters only, so 0–9 and punctuation stay upright in every italic style.

How do I make italic text in CSS or HTML?▼

Use font-style: italic in CSS, or wrap the words in <em> for stress. On a website, real italics beat Unicode ones: the words stay searchable and work with screen readers.
