Underline Text Generator

For most of the twentieth century, an underline was not emphasis — it was an instruction. Typewriters could not slant their letters, so the typing convention was to underline anything that print would set in italics: book titles, foreign phrases, stressed words. A typescript's underlines were messages to the typesetter, who would swap them for italics in the published version. Generations of style guides taught 'underline = italicise', and the rule only faded when word processors put real italics on every desk.

Then the web gave the underline a brand-new job that killed its old one: hyperlinks. Since the first browsers drew links as underlined blue text, underlining anything that is not clickable has been a small act of user hostility — which is why modern typography reserves the underline almost exclusively for links, and why an underlined bio line reads as faintly clickable even when it isn't.

Of the classic emphasis trio, underline is the one platforms abandoned. Bold and italics survive in markdown and rich-text editors, but a native underline control is genuinely scarce — messaging apps skip it, social bios never had it, and even where rich text exists, designers hide it to protect the link convention. If you want a ruled line under a display name or a bio heading, there is usually no button anywhere that will do it.

Hence the character route this page takes (the low-line mark U+0332, cousin to the strikethrough page's overlay): the rule becomes part of the text and goes wherever the text goes. Best kept to names and short headings — a full underlined paragraph fights both readability and the reader's instinct to click it.
