About the Gothic Alphabet
The gothic alphabet — also called Fraktur or blackletter — originated in 12th-century Europe as a calligraphic style used for manuscripts, official documents, and early printed books. Its distinctive angular strokes and ornate letterforms gave it a formal, dramatic appearance.
Today, gothic text is widely used for aesthetic purposes: band logos, tattoo designs, gaming usernames, Discord server themes, and social media profiles going for a dark or medieval vibe. Our gothic alphabet uses Unicode Fraktur characters that work as plain text on any device.
Gothic letters look significantly different from their standard Latin counterparts, which is what makes them so visually striking. The uppercase letters are especially ornate — letters like H (ℌ), I (ℑ), R (ℜ), and Z (ℨ) are barely recognizable compared to their regular forms.
Each letter in the gothic alphabet can be copied individually from the chart above, or you can convert entire words and sentences using the generator below. The text works everywhere — Instagram, Discord, TikTok, Twitter, gaming platforms, and messaging apps.
Where to Use Gothic Alphabet
- ✓Instagram bios & captions — a full gothic row fits comfortably inside the 150-character bio.
- ✓Discord usernames & messages — desktop and mobile clients draw gothic characters identically.
- ✓TikTok bios & comments — fits TikTok's 80-character bio perfectly and grabs attention in scrolling feeds.
- ✓WhatsApp status & display names — Unicode ignores WhatsApp's native formatting restrictions.
- !Avoid for long-form accessibility — reserve gothic for names and headers so screen-reader users keep the gothic message.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do five capitals in this chart look slightly different?▼
C, H, I, R and Z were encoded in Unicode as standalone math symbols years before the rest of the Fraktur alphabet, so they come from a different block. Rendering can differ subtly by font — the chart shows the canonical characters.
Can I copy the whole gothic alphabet at once?▼
Yes — use the full-row copy above the grid to grab all 26 uppercase or lowercase letters in one click, then trim what you need. Individual letters copy from their cards.
Why is there no gothic J or W in old inscriptions?▼
Both letters are late additions to the Latin alphabet — J split from I and W from doubled V/U centuries after blackletter matured, which is why authentic medieval samples manage without them. The modern Fraktur set includes both.
