A Letter Younger Than Its Own Script
Blackletter was a mature, centuries-old script before j existed as a letter. Gothic hands emerged in the twelfth century; i and j were not treated as separate letters until the early modern period, hundreds of years later. So the gothic J is a curious object: a letterform added to a script after that script's medieval heyday was already over β every authentic twelfth-century manuscript this style evokes managed without it.
The join shows. Most Fraktur typefaces traditionally cast a single capital serving both I and J, which is why old German title pages print 'Jn' where modern eyes expect 'In'. Unicode's Fraktur alphabet has a quirk that lands right beside this letter. The capital I was encoded early as a standalone math symbol β β, the 'imaginary part' operator β so the main Fraktur block keeps an empty slot where I would sit. J had no such prior life in mathematics, so its capital π (U+1D50D) sits in the main block as an ordinary member of the sequence.
