Gothic Letter H — Copy & Paste

The gothic capital on this page is ℌ, code point U+210C — and like the ℭ on the gothic C page, it is one of only five Fraktur capitals (C, H, I, R, Z) that live in Unicode's Letterlike Symbols block instead of the Fraktur alphabet proper. Mathematicians had been using ℌ as a standalone symbol for so long that Unicode encoded it years before anyone built the full blackletter A-to-Z; when the alphabet finally arrived, its H slot was left deliberately empty.

The lowercase 𝔥 (U+1D525) sits in the main block with its siblings — so this page's two characters are separated by thousands of code points and a decade of encoding history, and they still paste side by side like any ordinary pair of letters.

Fraktur left everyday printing generations ago, but open a modern algebra text and it is everywhere. The convention: when roman and italic alphabets are used up, Fraktur letters take the next tier of objects. In Lie theory the lowercase Fraktur is standard notation — a group G has a Lie algebra written 𝔤, a subgroup H has 𝔥 — and in ring theory Fraktur lowercase letters conventionally denote ideals. The lowercase 𝔥 you copy from this page is, in those fields, a working technical symbol with a precise meaning.

The reason is exactly the property that makes gothic text striking in a username: Fraktur forms are so visually distinct from roman, italic and script that the eye never confuses the tiers, even in a dense formula. Blackletter survives in mathematics for the same reason it survives in tattoo lettering — nothing else looks like it.

As a display letter, the ℌ is one of the more approachable gothic capitals: it keeps two recognisable posts and a connecting stroke, so unlike the gothic A or T it rarely gets misread. That makes it a safe monogram letter — H names (Hannah, Henry, Hugo) survive the gothic treatment better than most.

The lowercase 𝔥 carries the tall ascender typical of blackletter, and pairs cleanly with round neighbours: 'hope', 'home' and 'heart' all set well because the h's vertical mass alternates with open bowls.
