About Pig Latin Translator

Pig Latin is a classic word game and language play where English words are altered according to a simple set of rules. It's often used by children as a secret language, and by adults for linguistic humor or novelty.

The basic rules: For words starting with a consonant (or consonant cluster), move the consonants to the end of the word and add "ay". For example, "pig" becomes "igpay", "latin" becomes "atinlay", "hello" becomes "ellohay". For words starting with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), just add "way" or "yay" to the end: "apple" becomes "appleway", "egg" becomes "eggway".

Our translator handles these rules automatically and preserves capitalization. It can also decode Pig Latin back to English, though this process is imperfect since some Pig Latin forms are ambiguous.

Pig Latin has been around since at least the 1800s. It appears in literature, songs, and cartoons. While it's not actually related to Latin at all, the name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to how the transformed words sound vaguely like a foreign language.
