Blackletter vanished from body text centuries ago, but two institutions kept it on the front door. Newspapers made it the signature of the nameplate — The New York Times, The Washington Post and hundreds of mastheads worldwide still set their names in blackletter, a deliberate signal of continuity and authority that survives every redesign beneath it. And the certificate trade never left: diplomas, awards and legal testimonials still open in Old English capitals because the style reads as permanence itself.

That certificate tradition even sustained a profession — engrossing, the craft of hand-lettering formal documents. Engrossers lettered diplomas, resolutions and memorials in blackletter and script long after printing could have replaced them, precisely because a hand-drawn Old English heading certified that a document mattered. This generator's output taps the same signal: set a name in these letters and it reads as conferred, not typed.

Technically, this style is Unicode's Mathematical Bold Fraktur alphabet — the heavyweight version of the gothic style's regular Fraktur. Mathematics needed two distinguishable Fraktur weights for notation, Unicode encoded both, and text styling inherited the pair: same broken-stroke skeletons, roughly double the ink. On dark backgrounds and at small sizes, the bold cut holds its shape where the lighter one thins out — one reason it became the default 'Old English' of social media.
