Old English Letter B — Copy & Paste

Blackletter has a behaviour no modern style shares: adjacent letters bite. When a letter ending in a bow — like b — met a letter beginning with one — like e or o — Textura scribes did not leave a gap between the two curves. They overlapped them, fusing the facing bows into a single shared stroke. Paleographers literally call it 'biting', and a bitten 'be' or 'bo' pair is one of the fastest ways to date a manuscript to the high blackletter period.

The b, with its right-facing bowl, was one of the great biters — 'be' is among the most common pairs in English and German alike. Unicode characters cannot bite (each glyph is its own island), so the 𝖇 you copy here always keeps its own bowl. But if converted blackletter text ever strikes you as slightly gappier than a real manuscript page, biting is the missing ingredient.

The bold Fraktur capital 𝕭 (U+1D56D) is built like its roman ancestor — a spine with two stacked bowls — but Fraktur fractures the bowls into angular segments and hangs a decorative spur off the spine. It stays one of the more recognisable capitals in the set because the two-bowl silhouette survives the ornament, unlike the A or T whose skeletons get rebuilt entirely.

The lowercase 𝖇 (U+1D587) is a tall ascender with a single bowl, and its main legibility hazard is its lookalike v: in dense blackletter, a b whose bowl does not fully close can read as the German-style v. If you convert a word like 'baby' or 'bribe' below and the bowls stay shut at your target size, the letter is safe.

B-names — Benjamin, Bella, Bruno, Beatriz — make the 𝕭 a heavy-duty monogram letter, and the capital's stacked-bowl mass suits it: it reads as solid and established, which is exactly the register blackletter initials are usually chosen for. It is a staple on certificates and bookplates for that reason.

In full converted words, b's high frequency at word-starts ('brave', 'bold', 'blessed') means the lowercase leads often — and a leading 𝖇 with its tall ascender gives a word a strong left edge.
