Zalgo Text Generator

Zalgo has a documented origin: in 2004, Something Awful forum artist Dave Kelly (posting as Shmorky) began editing syndicated newspaper comics so their characters raved about an approaching entity called Zalgo, faces melting and speech bubbles corrupting. The gag spread through forum culture, and somewhere along the way the corruption acquired its typographic form — text drowning in stacked diacritics, the visual signature of Zalgo's approach. By the late 2000s 'zalgo text' was the internet's standard way to write like reality was tearing.

The style outlived the joke. Most people who paste dripping text today have never heard of the comics; the aesthetic became a free-standing tool for horror bios, ARGs and Halloween posts — a rare case of a specific forum bit hardening into a permanent text format.

Zalgo works by exploiting how text rendering handles combining marks: each mark is drawn relative to its base letter, and marks keep stacking outward — above, below, through — as more arrive. Nothing in the standard caps the pile, so fifty marks on one letter simply climb fifty marks high, escaping the line box and crawling over whatever the layout put nearby. The effect is rendering working exactly as specified, on input nobody specified for.

The pushback is real: extreme mark runs have crashed apps and hung rendering engines badly enough that platforms now defend themselves — some strip marks past a threshold, others refuse messages entirely, and moderation tooling commonly flags heavy zalgo as spam. Practical use lives at moderate intensity: enough drip to read as corrupted, not enough to trigger the sanitisers.
