About Cursive B

Cursive B is one of the trickier letters because the lowercase 𝒷 does not look like a printed b at all — it ends with a little rightward hook near the middle rather than a round bowl on the baseline. The capital ℬ keeps two stacked bumps on a tall looped stem, closer to print but more ornate.

How to Write Cursive B

Form the capital B with a tall looped stem, then add two bumps down the right side. The lowercase b is the surprising one: draw a tall loop up to the top line and back down to the baseline, then finish with a small hook that curls up and to the right at belt height — that hook, not a bottom bowl, is how cursive b connects to the next letter.

Common mistake

Giving the lowercase b a round bowl on the baseline like printed text — cursive b ends in a small upper hook so it can link to the following letter.

B Is One of the Four Letters That Connect From the Top

Almost every cursive letter finishes at the baseline and hands off to the next letter from down there. Four letters break that rule: b, o, v and w. All four close their shape near the x-height and exit with a small horizontal stroke along the top, which means the letter that follows has to be entered from above rather than from below. That is the whole reason 'bo', 'br' and 'bl' feel awkward when you first learn them — your hand is starting the next letter from an unfamiliar height.

It matters most in the joins b actually makes. Cursive b is very often followed by a round letter or an l — think 'blue', 'bloom', 'brave', 'bella' — and each of those needs the bridge to come down from the top exit into the next shape. If you try to link a b from the baseline out of habit, you will either add a stroke that is not there or leave the b's bowl broken open. Practise b against its real neighbours rather than on its own.

Why Cursive B Gets Mistaken for Another Letter

Cursive b starts as a tall looped ascender, exactly like l, h, k and f. Then it closes into a bowl and exits along the top. The trouble is that if the bowl does not close, what remains is a tall loop with a tail — which is an l. And if the top exit stroke runs long and flat, the b starts to read as an 'li' pair instead. This is the most common way a handwritten b becomes unreadable, and it is a closing problem, not a looping problem.

The capital ℬ fails the opposite way. Printed B is a straight spine with two stacked bowls; the cursive capital is a looped stem with the bowls flowing off it in one continuous motion. Drawn with a straight print spine it stops reading as handwriting at all — the loop in the stem is what marks it as cursive.

The Script B You Can Copy — What It Actually Is

The characters at the top of this page are Unicode text rather than an image or an installed font, so they paste straight into an Instagram bio, a Discord display name or a TikTok caption. The two cases sit in different Unicode blocks: the lowercase 𝒷 is U+1D4B7, in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, while the capital ℬ is U+212C, in Letterlike Symbols.

The reason is the same historical quirk that affects script capital F, script capital H and script lowercase g: those characters were already encoded in Unicode before the mathematical script alphabet was added, so the newer block was left with deliberate holes rather than encoding them a second time. It has no effect on copying — both ℬ and 𝒷 are ordinary Unicode characters and render correctly on every current phone and computer.

Cursive B — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does cursive b connect from the top?

Because b closes its bowl up at the x-height rather than at the baseline. It is one of only four letters — b, o, v and w — that exit along the top, which is why joins like 'bl' and 'br' feel different from every other connection in cursive.

Why does my cursive b look like an l?

Because the bowl is not closing. Cursive b and cursive l start with the identical tall looped ascender; the b is defined entirely by the bowl that closes against the stem and exits along the top. Leave that bowl open and what remains is simply an l.

What is the fancy script B I can copy and paste?

The capital is ℬ (U+212C, Script Capital B) and the lowercase is 𝒷 (U+1D4B7, Mathematical Script Small B). They come from two different Unicode blocks, but both are standard text and paste into any bio, username or caption field.
