Cursive R — How to Write R in Cursive

Cursive r is the letter people get wrong most often, and it is almost never a matter of effort — it is that the r has so little to it. Strip it back and the letter is a short upstroke, a tiny shoulder at the top, and a drop back to the baseline. That shoulder is a fraction of a centimetre of pen travel, and it carries the entire identity of the letter. Flatten it and the r becomes an i. Round it too much and it drifts toward an n. Point it and it starts to look like a v.

This is why r is worth practising far beyond what its simplicity suggests. It is one of the most common consonants in English, so a weak r spreads through your handwriting faster than almost any other flaw. The instruction that actually helps is to think of the shoulder as a deliberate pause at the top of the upstroke — a small flat plateau before the pen comes down — rather than a corner you turn at speed.

Cursive is full of capitals that abandon their printed forms entirely — the E becomes two stacked loops, the Q looks like a figure 2, the G reads as an ornate figure-eight. The capital ℛ is one of the few that stays recognisable. It keeps the tall stem, the rounded shoulder and the kicking leg of the printed R; cursive simply adds a loop to the stem and lets the leg flow away to the right instead of stopping dead.

That makes R an unusually forgiving capital to learn, and a useful one for names — Rose, Ruby, River, Ryan — because the leg exits heading right at the baseline, which is exactly where the next letter wants to be picked up. Where learners go wrong is drawing the stem as a straight printed post. The loop in the stem is the one concession cursive demands, and without it the letter stops reading as handwriting.

The characters at the top of this page are Unicode text rather than an image or an installed font, which is why they paste cleanly into an Instagram bio, a Discord display name or a TikTok caption. The two cases sit in different Unicode blocks: the lowercase 𝓇 is U+1D4C7, in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, while the capital ℛ is U+211B, in Letterlike Symbols.

It is the same historical gap that affects script capital B, F, H, L and M — all of those had already been encoded in Unicode before the mathematical script alphabet arrived, so the newer block was deliberately left with holes rather than encoding the same characters twice. It changes nothing about copying: both ℛ and 𝓇 are ordinary Unicode characters that display correctly on any current phone or computer.
