The circled R is the most commercially important circled letter in existence: ® , the registered trademark symbol, is structurally a capital R inside a ring. It appears on packaging, logos and advertising the world over, and it carries real legal weight — in most jurisdictions you may only attach ® to a mark that has been formally registered with a trademark office. Use it on an unregistered name and you can actually be penalised for a false claim of registration.

That is the sharp distinction behind three symbols people mix up. ® means registered. The small raised ™ means a trademark is claimed but not (or not yet) registered — anyone can use it. And ℠, the service mark, does the same job for services rather than goods. Only ® requires the paperwork to be done; the other two are assertions, not certifications.

Here is the subtlety worth getting right: the registered-trademark ® is its own dedicated Unicode character, U+00AE, encoded decades ago for legal and business text. The bubble R you copy here is a different code point — Ⓡ (U+24C7), from the Enclosed Alphanumerics block — which is why it looks like ® but is not it. If you actually need the trademark symbol, ® is the one to use; Ⓡ is the decorative circled letter, free of legal meaning.

The two existing separately is deliberate. A symbol carrying legal consequence could not be left to share a code point with a general-purpose bubble letter, so ® was encoded on its own long before the full circled alphabet arrived. Copy Ⓡ for a username; reach for ® only when a mark is genuinely registered.

R is one of the highest-demand bubble letters — around eight to nine thousand searches a month — riding a wave of R-names (Riley, Ryan, Rosa, Ruby) and its high frequency as an English consonant. The capital Ⓡ fills its circle solidly, and because its silhouette echoes the familiar ®, it reads as 'official' in a way that gives bubble usernames a faintly branded, badge-like feel.
