S in Bubble Letters — Copy & Paste

In a huge swathe of video games — and the anime and manga around them — the top grade is not A. It is S. Complete a level flawlessly and you earn an 'S rank', a tier sitting above A, B, C and D, and the circled Ⓢ is one of the characters used to display it. The convention grew out of Japanese grading, where a mark better than the top letter grade needed a symbol of its own; 'S' (variously explained as standing for 'Special', 'Superior', or the Japanese 秀, shū, 'excellence') became that symbol, and it spread worldwide through games like Devil May Cry, Sonic and countless racing and rhythm titles.

So the circled S you copy here carries a quiet connotation the other bubble letters lack: to a large gaming audience, Ⓢ reads as 'best in class'. It is a genuinely useful thing to know when choosing a letter for a gamertag — the S is doing a little reputational work for free.

Open any English dictionary and the S section is the fattest of all — more words begin with s than with any other letter. Where the standard bubble letter reads soft and playful, the negative form reads like signage or a sticker, and it pairs naturally with the 'S rank' association: a bold, badge-like S.

The trade-off is support. The outlined Ⓢ (U+24C8) renders essentially everywhere; the negative 🅢, from a supplementary block, is reliable on current phones and desktops but can fall back to a plain box on older systems.
