Old English Letter S — Copy & Paste

German's most distinctive character — the eszett, ß — was born on blackletter pages, and it was born from the letter s. Blackletter writing used two forms of lowercase s: the long ſ inside words and the round s at their ends. When the long ſ collided with a following z or s in German words, scribes fused the pair into a single ligature — and that fused shape hardened into ß, a character that still carries 'sz' in its very name (es-zett, 's-z').

So the ß on a modern German keyboard is a fossil of exactly the writing tradition this page's 𝕾 and 𝖘 imitate. Unicode encodes it at U+00DF, entirely separate from the s you copy here — but its ancestry runs straight through blackletter's double-s system.

English quietly dropped the long ſ around 1800, but German Fraktur printing kept the two-s system alive deep into the twentieth century, with strict positional rules: long ſ at the start of and inside a syllable, round s at its end. Compositors learned the rules as part of the trade, and getting them wrong marked a printer as sloppy the way a spelling error would.

The Unicode character you copy on this page is the round s — 𝖘 (U+1D598), with the capital 𝕾 at U+1D57E. The long ſ survives separately at U+017F if you want the full historical texture, but be aware modern readers consistently misread it as an f; for anything meant to be read quickly, the round 𝖘 is the right choice.

If you read anything printed before about 1800 — or any German Fraktur book — you will need the one rule that separates the long ſ from the f it impersonates: the crossbar. An f carries a full bar crossing its stem on both sides; the long ſ has either no bar at all or only a small nub on the left side of the stem, never crossing through. That single detail is why 'ſuccess' is success and not fuccess, and why first-time readers of old documents stumble exactly where trained readers glide.

It is also the reason the long ſ died. Once print sizes shrank and reading speeds mattered, a letter distinguishable from f only by half a crossbar was a liability; English printers dropped it within a generation around the turn of the nineteenth century, and the round s — the shape you copy on this page — took over every position in the word.

S starts more English words than any other letter — dictionaries give S the fattest section — and it starts a large share of given names too, so the 𝕾 does constant monogram duty alongside A and M. It is also one of the more legible Fraktur capitals: unlike the 𝕬, the 𝕾 keeps a recognisable S-spine under its ornament, so it survives small sizes better.
