S in Old English Letters โ the Character
S pairs ๐พ (U+1D57E) with ๐ โ S renders natively on every device.
This Letter Invented ร
German's most distinctive character โ the eszett, ร โ was born on blackletter pages, and it was born from the letter s. Blackletter writing used two forms of lowercase s: the long ลฟ inside words and the round s at their ends. When the long ลฟ collided with a following z or s in German words, scribes fused the pair into a single ligature โ and that fused shape hardened into ร, a character that still carries 'sz' in its very name (es-zett, 's-z').
So the ร on a modern German keyboard is a fossil of exactly the writing tradition this page's ๐พ and ๐ imitate. Unicode encodes it at U+00DF, entirely separate from the s you copy here โ but its ancestry runs straight through blackletter's double-s system.
Two S's Per Word โ The Rule Fraktur Kept Alive
English quietly dropped the long ลฟ around 1800, but German Fraktur printing kept the two-s system alive deep into the twentieth century, with strict positional rules: long ลฟ at the start of and inside a syllable, round s at its end. Compositors learned the rules as part of the trade, and getting them wrong marked a printer as sloppy the way a spelling error would.
The Unicode character you copy on this page is the round s โ ๐ (U+1D598), with the capital ๐พ at U+1D57E. The long ลฟ survives separately at U+017F if you want the full historical texture, but be aware modern readers consistently misread it as an f; for anything meant to be read quickly, the round ๐ is the right choice.
How to Tell ลฟ From f
If you read anything printed before about 1800 โ or any German Fraktur book โ you will need the one rule that separates the long ลฟ from the f it impersonates: the crossbar. An f carries a full bar crossing its stem on both sides; the long ลฟ has either no bar at all or only a small nub on the left side of the stem, never crossing through. That single detail is why 'ลฟuccess' is success and not fuccess, and why first-time readers of old documents stumble exactly where trained readers glide.
It is also the reason the long ลฟ died. Once print sizes shrank and reading speeds mattered, a letter distinguishable from f only by half a crossbar was a liability; English printers dropped it within a generation around the turn of the nineteenth century, and the round s โ the shape you copy on this page โ took over every position in the word.
Using the Old English S
S starts more English words than any other letter โ dictionaries give S the fattest section โ and it starts a large share of given names too, so the ๐พ does constant monogram duty alongside A and M. It is also one of the more legible Fraktur capitals: unlike the ๐ฌ, the ๐พ keeps a recognisable S-spine under its ornament, so it survives small sizes better.
The lowercase ๐ has one quirk worth checking: its tight double-curve can crowd against tall neighbours like t and l ('street', 'castle'). Run your actual word through the converter below and look at the s-joins specifically before committing to anything engraved or inked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the German ร come from?โผ
From blackletter s. Writing used a long ลฟ inside words and a round s at their ends; when long ลฟ met z or s in German, scribes fused them into one ligature, which hardened into ร โ 'eszett' literally means s-z. It lives at U+00DF, a fossil of the system these letters imitate.
What is the long s (ลฟ) and should I use it?โผ
The in-word form of s used until about 1800 in English and much later in German Fraktur (U+017F in Unicode). It is historically authentic but modern readers reliably misread it as f, so for anything meant to be read at a glance, use the round ๐ from this page instead.
