Old English Letter D — Copy & Paste

Old English — the language — had a letter this page's visitors have usually never heard of: eth (ð, capital Ð), a d with a stroke through its ascender, used for the th sound alongside thorn (þ). 'That' could be written 'ðæt'. Eth died out of English by the late Middle Ages, outlived by thorn, which itself famously degenerated into the y of 'Ye Olde'. Unicode keeps eth alive at U+00F0 — and Icelandic still uses it daily, the last major holdout of the original Old English letter set.

So the letter d carries a hidden piece of this style's namesake language: when people set 'Old English' text today, they are using an alphabet that quietly lost two of its th letters on the way to the present. The 𝖉 you copy here is the survivor's form.

Look closely at the bold Fraktur lowercase 𝖉 (U+1D589) and compare it with the d you are reading now: the blackletter form curves its ascender back over the bowl instead of sending it straight up. That is the uncial d — an older, rounder letterform that blackletter kept for its lowercase while most later styles standardised on the straight-stemmed version. It is one of the most reliable tells that a text is set in a blackletter tradition rather than merely bolded.

The capital 𝕯 (U+1D56F) plays the opposite game: a huge open bowl with a spurred left stem, one of the more decorative capitals in the set. Between the two, the d pages of blackletter specimen books always looked busier than their neighbours — this letter simply has more curves to show off.

D-names are monogram staples — David, Diana, Diego, Dmitri — and the 𝕯's big bowl makes a generous single-letter mark. In full words, the lowercase's curled ascender gives 'dark', 'dream' and 'legend' exactly the medieval flavour people come to this style for, and because the curl occupies space an ascender would leave empty, d-heavy words set denser and more evenly than in most styles.
