Gothic Letter D — Copy & Paste

For most of a millennium, British money was counted in a blackletter abbreviation: £sd — pounds, shillings and pence — where the d for penny stood for the Roman denarius. Prices were chalked and printed as '2s 6d' (two shillings sixpence), and the d survived until decimalisation in 1971, when 'd' became 'p' overnight and a thousand years of habit ended. Generations learned arithmetic in a currency whose smallest unit wore a Latin letter inherited through exactly the manuscript tradition these characters imitate.

So the 𝔡 you copy here has a long career in ledgers behind it — the letter that priced bread, beer and postage across the English-speaking world until within living memory.

Fraktur inherited two d traditions — the upright roman d and the round-backed uncial form — and its lowercase 𝔡 (U+1D521) leans on the round one: the ascender curls back over the bowl rather than standing straight. In dense text that curl is a gift, breaking the vertical monotony of the minim letters around it; along with the f and the long-tailed letters, d is one of the shapes readers of Fraktur navigate by.

The capital 𝔇 (U+1D507) is a grand open bowl with a spurred spine — like its bold old-english cousin, one of the more decorative capitals, and best appreciated at sizes that let the interior flourishes read.

D-names — Dmitri, Delia, Dario, Dagmar — give the 𝔇 regular monogram duty. In words, the lowercase's curled ascender gives 'dread', 'dungeon' and 'kindred' their medieval slant — this is a style where the d genuinely earns its keep.
