The Ampersand Is a Gothic e Holding a t
The & sign on your keyboard is a ligature of the letters e and t β Latin et, 'and' β fused so long ago that the join became invisible. Roman scribes were already combining the pair; medieval hands, including the gothic ones this style imitates, wrote the et-ligature so constantly that it evolved into a single character with its own identity. Look at an ampersand slowly and you can still find the E's bowl and the t's crossbar tangled inside it. Even its name records the fusion: schoolchildren reciting the alphabet ended '...X, Y, Z, and per se and' β 'and-per-se-and' slurred into 'ampersand'.
Gothic text had a rival too: the Tironian et (β, U+204A), a shorthand 'and' from Cicero's secretary Tiro, which blackletter scribes used heavily and which still survives on Irish signage. Two fossilised 'ands', both carrying this letter inside them.
The Workhorse in the Fence
As in every style, e is the most frequent letter β but gothic's dense texture raises the stakes. The Fraktur π’ (U+1D522) is built with a small angular eye and a broken back, and because it recurs so relentlessly, its design effectively sets the tone of any converted text: a page of Fraktur is, to a first approximation, a pattern of e's and minims.
The capital π (U+1D508) is a fractured C-form with an inner tongue β ornate, but its open right side keeps it distinct from the closed π at a glance.
