Gothic Letter Q — Copy & Paste

In medieval Latin manuscripts, q led a double life: written in full at the front of words, and collapsing into shorthand at their ends. The syllable -que ('and') was so common in Latin that scribes almost never wrote it out — a q with a stroke or a semicolon-like squiggle after it (q̄, q;) meant -que, so 'atque' became 'atq;' and readers expanded it without a blink. Whole families of q-abbreviations existed: qi with a bar for 'qui', qo for 'quo', each one a keystroke-saver centuries before keyboards.

These q-abbreviations were among the most-used shorthand in the entire scribal toolkit, and early printers cast type for them — Gutenberg's fonts include abbreviated-q sorts. The 𝔮 you copy here is the full form; its historical workload was carried half by ghosts.

The Fraktur lowercase 𝔮 (U+1D52E) is a bowl with a straight tail below the baseline — cleanly distinct from the g, whose descender curls into a closed loop in this style. That distinction matters more in gothic than elsewhere: German and Latin both use q exclusively before u, so the letter always arrives with a round neighbour, and its straight tail against the u's open cups is what keeps the pair legible in dense settings.

The capital 𝔔 (U+1D514) is a grand O-form with a tail bursting through the lower right — one of the few Fraktur capitals whose defining feature survives at small sizes, since the tail breaks the letter's outline unmistakably.

Q-names are rare — Quentin, Queenie — which makes the 𝔔 an uncommon and therefore striking monogram. In words, q's guaranteed u-companion ('quest', 'antique') means the pair should be previewed together; if 'qu' reads cleanly in the converter below, the letter has done its job.

For historical texture, note that a genuine medieval setting would likely have abbreviated your -que endings entirely — the full spelling is itself a modern habit.
