Notice what is odd: every plain Fraktur letter from A to Z lives in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, except five capitals. C, H, I, R and Z were already encoded in Unicode's Letterlike Symbols block as standalone mathematical symbols years before the full Fraktur alphabet arrived, so the alphabet was built with five holes rather than duplicate them. The ℭ you just copied is one of those five originals.

This matters to exactly one group of people — anyone generating Fraktur text in code, who will discover the capitals are not sequential — and it is invisible to everyone else. The character pastes, renders and travels like any other. But it is a genuine piece of Unicode archaeology sitting in your clipboard.

In type, the word gothic points in two directions at once. In the European tradition, gothic script means blackletter — the dense medieval hand these characters imitate, named (originally as an insult) after the Goths by Renaissance humanists who considered the style barbaric next to their revived roman letters. But in American type-founding, 'gothic' came to mean the exact opposite: plain, unadorned sans-serif faces, which is why fonts called Century Gothic or Franklin Gothic look nothing like the ℭ on this page.

So when you search 'gothic letter c', you are using the older, European sense — and this page serves it: a Fraktur c, angular and broken-stroked, the style of Gutenberg's Bible rather than of a minimalist logo.

Fraktur was not always a decorative choice. From the sixteenth century until well into the twentieth, it was simply how German was printed — newspapers, novels, schoolbooks, street signs. Generations of readers found roman type foreign and Fraktur normal, the exact reverse of today. The style only left everyday use abruptly, in 1941, when a German decree switched official printing to roman type; after the war, roman stayed, and Fraktur retreated to mastheads, beer labels and certificates.

That long run as a working text face is why Fraktur letterforms are so thoroughly developed — every letter, including this c, had to survive daily newspaper printing at small sizes, not just look good as an initial. It is also why the style still reads as 'serious old European document' at a glance: for four centuries, that is literally what it was.

The lowercase Fraktur 𝔠 (U+1D520) is the workhorse here: compact and legible in running text, it carries the gothic flavour without overwhelming a bio or nickname. The capital ℭ is a statement letter — strongest as an initial or in a very short word, where its broken strokes have space to register as deliberate style rather than noise.
