Gothic Letter I — Copy & Paste

The gothic capital on this page is not a decorated I — it is ℑ, code point U+2111, and in every complex-analysis textbook on earth it means 'the imaginary part of'. Given z = 3 + 4i, a mathematician writes ℑ(z) = 4. Its constant companion ℜ, the Fraktur R two rows over in this alphabet, takes the real part. The pair worked in mathematical typesetting for so long before Unicode that both were encoded as standalone symbols years ahead of the full blackletter alphabet.

Modern texts increasingly write Im(z) and Re(z) instead — easier to typeset, easier to say — but ℑ remains standard in physics and engineering literature, and it is precisely this double life that makes the character fun to use: your username's gothic I is, to the right reader, a live piece of notation.

Blackletter is the script that invented the i's dot — scribes began marking the letter so it would not vanish among the identical vertical strokes of m, n and u — and the gothic lowercase 𝔦 (U+1D526) wears it still. In a dense Fraktur word the dot does exactly the job it was invented for eight centuries ago: it is often the only feature that separates 'in' from 'm' at a glance.

That makes the lowercase the legibility anchor of this page. Where the capital ℑ is ornate to the point of ambiguity — cold readers regularly parse it as a J or a fancy T — the dotted 𝔦 is unmistakable. In any converted word, trust the lowercase; deploy the capital where its strangeness is the point.
