Gothic Letter Z — Copy & Paste

The gothic capital Z on this page — ℨ, code point U+2128 — completes the set of five Fraktur capitals (C, H, I, R, Z) that Unicode encoded as standalone mathematical symbols before the full blackletter alphabet existed. Like its four siblings it lives in the Letterlike Symbols block, and the Fraktur alphabet proper keeps an empty slot where its Z would be. The lowercase 𝔷 (U+1D537) sits in the main block as usual.

The ℨ is the least famous of the five — it never acquired a single dominant meaning the way ℜ (real part) and ℑ (imaginary part) did — but it earned its early encoding the same way: nineteenth- and twentieth-century mathematical typesetting used Fraktur capitals as a distinct symbol tier, and the Z was part of the working set.

Here is a piece of blackletter fallout hiding in plain sight: the Scottish surnames Menzies and Dalziel are traditionally pronounced 'Mingis' and 'Dee-ell' — no z sound at all. The z in those names was never a z. Middle English and Older Scots used a letter called yogh (ȝ, U+021D) for a y-like sound, and in blackletter-influenced hands the yogh's tailed shape was nearly identical to a tailed z. When printers standardised on continental type cases that had no yogh, they set z in its place — permanently.

It is the same story as 'Ye Olde' (where the thorn þ was replaced by a lookalike y), and together the two substitutions are a reminder of how much modern spelling was decided by which letters happened to be in an imported box of type. The blackletter 𝔷's distinctive tailed form is exactly the shape that made the confusion possible.

In English, z is the rarest letter of the alphabet; in German — the language Fraktur printed daily for four centuries — it is an everyday workhorse, opening words as common as zu, Zeit and zwischen. So the blackletter z was cut, tested and refined under real load in a way an English-centric type history wouldn't suggest, and the 𝔷's confident tailed design shows it.

For modern use that pedigree pays off: the lowercase 𝔷 is one of the most distinctive letters in the whole gothic set, and z-led names and words (Zoe, Zara, 'zenith') take the style unusually well because that tail gives the eye an instant anchor.
