Italic type has a birthplace and a business plan. In 1501 the Venetian publisher Aldus Manutius, with his punchcutter Francesco Griffo, introduced a new slanted, condensed letterform for a revolutionary product: cheap, pocket-sized editions of the classics. The compressed slant packed more words onto each small page, cutting paper costs on books meant to be carried rather than chained to a lectern. The style was named for its homeland — italic, the letter of Italy — and it was piracy-worthy from day one; counterfeit 'Aldine' editions with knockoff italics appeared within years.

One fossil of that origin survived for centuries: the first italics were lowercase only, set with upright roman capitals, because the slanted lowercase was the space-saver and capitals were left alone. Matching italic capitals came later — the fully slanted alphabet you generate here is the finished version of a 500-year-old space-saving hack.

Like bold, italic survived into Unicode because mathematics made it meaningful. An italic x is a variable. An upright x is just a letter. So the italic alphabet was encoded as its own characters. It even inherited one of Unicode's famous holes. Physics had already claimed the italic h as the Planck constant ℎ (U+210E). The math-italic block skips that slot, and every italic generator quietly borrows the Planck symbol for its h.

Culturally, the slant reads as a lowered voice — titles, emphasis, inner thoughts, ship names. Where bold interrupts, italic leans in; pasting these characters gives a bio or caption that murmured register on platforms that offer no italics button of their own.
