Most people looking for symbols want them for a name. Before you paste one, it helps to know why symbols sometimes get rejected.

Most platforms split your identity into two fields. The @handle is the unique one people type to find you, and it usually accepts only plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods. The display name sits above it. That is the field that accepts symbols and styled text.

Discord works exactly this way. Its @username has been lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods since 2023, so no symbol will save there. The display name takes a wide range of Unicode. TikTok follows the same split: the @username stays plain, while the nickname above your videos accepts most Unicode and can change once every 7 days.

So if a symbol will not save, you are almost always editing the handle rather than the display name.

Which symbols travel best? Hearts, stars, arrows and crowns are old, widely supported characters, so they render on nearly every device. Newer emoji vary more, because each vendor draws its own artwork.
