Check the Capitals Before You Commit

The regular gothic alphabet borrows five capitals from an older part of Unicode: C, H, I, R and Z come out as ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ. They were encoded in 1993, eight years before the rest of the set, and a phone can draw them with a different font, so a name like ℌ𝔞𝔯𝔭𝔢𝔯 or ℜ𝔬𝔰𝔞 may show a capital that doesn't quite match. The bold Old English alphabet has all 26 capitals in one set: 𝕳𝖆𝖗𝖕𝖊𝖗, 𝕽𝖔𝖘𝖆.

Cursive borrows even more — the capitals B, E, F, H, I, L, M and R, plus the small e, g and o. For a tattoo this matters more than anywhere else. Preview the exact word you plan to ink, capital letter included, and if one letter looks off, compare it in the other style.

Screenshot the Version You Like

Unicode decides which letter each character is, not exactly how it is drawn. Every phone and computer draws these characters with its own fonts, so the same text can look slightly different on an iPhone, an Android phone and a Windows PC. When you find a version you like, take a screenshot and bring that image to your artist instead of sending the text.

Your artist will redraw the lettering anyway, sizing it to the spot on your body. Dense styles like Old English need more room than thin script, so ask how small the lettering can go before you settle on a style. Treat the preview as the start of that conversation, not as a stencil.

Which Style Suits Which Tattoo

Old English and gothic are dense and angular. They suit names, dates and one-word pieces with room around them. Cursive and cursive bold flow, which suits quotes and names that follow a curve, like a wrist or a collarbone. Typewriter letters are plain and evenly spaced. Italic is the quiet option: a slant with no flourishes.

Dates are the catch. Typewriter is the only style on this page with its own digits (𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟼); the others leave numbers plain. By US search volume in Ahrefs, cursive is the most-searched tattoo lettering: about 2,100 searches a month for cursive tattoo fonts, against 800 for Old English, 800 for typewriter and 500 for gothic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use these fonts for a tattoo?▼

Yes, as a preview. Type the exact words, pick the style you like, and show your artist a screenshot. They will draw the final lettering to fit the size and placement.

Why does one capital look different in gothic?▼

Five gothic capitals — C, H, I, R and Z (ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ) — come from an older Unicode block, and some devices draw them with a different font. The bold Old English style keeps all 26 capitals in one set.

Which tattoo font style works for dates?▼

Typewriter. It is the only style here with its own digits (𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟼). Old English, gothic, cursive and italic leave numbers in plain type.

What is the most popular tattoo font style?▼

By US search volume, cursive: about 2,100 monthly searches for cursive tattoo fonts, compared with 800 for Old English, 800 for typewriter and 500 for gothic (Ahrefs, September 2026).
