Why ¹ ² ³ Work Everywhere and ⁴ Sometimes Doesn't
Superscript has a fault line running through it, and it dates to the 1980s. The superscript one, two and three (¹ ² ³) were included in ISO 8859-1 — the pre-Unicode Western character set — because typewriters and early printers needed them for footnotes and squared/cubed units. Unicode inherited them into its Latin-1 block. The rest of the digits (⁴ through ⁹, plus ⁰) arrived later in a separate Superscripts and Subscripts block, and the two groups are drawn from different design lineages.
The visible result: in some fonts, ²³ and ⁴⁵ sit at slightly different heights or weights, a mismatch you can sometimes spot in '⁴²'. It is the clearest everyday example of Unicode's geological layers — characters encoded decades apart, doing one job, never quite agreeing on the details.
Footnotes, Exponents, and Ordinals
Raised characters carry three old traditions at once. Mathematics uses them for exponents — x², 10⁹ — where the raising is the meaning. Publishing uses them for footnote markers, a convention centuries older than the typewriter. And several languages build ordinals with them: English 1ˢᵗ and 2ⁿᵈ, Spanish and Portuguese 1º and 1ª with their dedicated ordinal indicators º and ª, which are separate Unicode characters older than the superscript alphabet itself.
Whole raised words extend those three traditions past their original jobs. That is why superscript text reads instinctively as annotation. A bio line set this way becomes a footnote to itself — a caption floating over an invisible page.
