Old English Letter V — Copy & Paste

Open any English book printed before the mid-1600s and the spelling looks systematically wrong: 'vnto us a child is giuen', 'loue', 'haue', 'vpon'. It is not sloppiness — it is a rule. Before u and v became separate letters, printers used the pointed form v at the start of a word and the rounded form u everywhere inside it, regardless of sound. So 'vs' (us) took a v and 'haue' (have) took a u, both perfectly correct by the convention of the day.

The positional rule ran through blackletter manuscripts into early print and only dissolved when u and v were finally assigned to vowel and consonant by sound in the seventeenth century. The bold Fraktur 𝖛 you copy here descends from that pointed word-initial form — the shape that once began 'vnto' whatever sound followed.

Within blackletter's dense texture, v is one of the letters that keeps a genuinely distinct silhouette: two angled strokes meeting low, where nearly everything around it is vertical. That point is worth guarding, because Fraktur's b and v can drift together — a b whose bowl fails to close reads as the pointed v, a hazard German printers knew well since both letters are common in German.

The capital 𝖁 (U+1D581) hangs the signature Fraktur spur off its left stroke and keeps the deep point. Beside the w — historically its doubled self — the single v reads cleaner and sharper at every size.

V-names — Victor, Valentina, Vikram, Veronica — give the 𝖁 a strong monogram: the deep point reads as decisive. In converted words, v is relatively rare in English, so its distinct wedge stands out usefully in 'love', 'brave' and 'victory'.
