Almost every platform has two different name fields, and they follow opposite rules. Your handle — the @username people type to find or tag you — is restricted to plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods on Instagram, TikTok and X, so fancy Unicode simply cannot be saved there. Your display name is the free-form field, and that is where gothic, bold and cursive text lives. This is why you see a plain @handle sitting above a stylish 𝔡𝔦𝔰𝔭𝔩𝔞𝔶 𝔫𝔞𝔪𝔢 on the same profile.

Discord splits the same way: your unique username (the one with the tag) stays plain, while your server nickname and global display name accept styled text. Roblox is the strict exception — it filters both, so most Unicode styling is rejected outright there. If a generator's output refuses to save, you have almost certainly hit a handle field rather than a display-name field; switch to the display name and it will take.

A username has one job the moment someone wants to tag you or say it out loud: it has to be legible. That pushes username styling toward the cleaner families — bold, small caps and monospace stay perfectly readable, while dense gothic or heavy zalgo can turn a short name into a puzzle. Gaming and Discord culture leans gothic and old-english for drama; aesthetic and 'soft' profiles lean cursive and small caps; either works as long as the underlying word survives the styling.

A practical tip that keeps names readable: style the letters but leave any numbers and separators plain, and avoid combining marks (the stacked-accent 'glitch' look) in a name you actually want people to recognise. Test the finished name at small size — usernames are usually displayed far smaller than a bio, and ornate strokes lose detail first when they shrink.
